I'm a long-term fan of Total Commander, but I see there's a new(ish)
file manager: XYplorer, http://www.xyplorer.com/ It's a single-pane
program but with a tabbed interface, and apparently originated as a
file-finder with file management features added. The main version is
shareware, but the author has recently released a slightly older
version as freeware: http://www.xyplorer.com/free.php

Quite small, <1 Mb download (as zip file); no-install/portable. Not so
many features as the shareware version (naturally) but still very good
for file management tasks. Worth a look.

It is a very nice program. I registered it not too long ago; right before
a price increase. My only issue at this point is the lack of dual pane
support. The developer does not think that it is important, but when you
use the keyboard for nearly all of your file management operations, it is
critical.

The program is completely portable like Total Commander. The only things
that you need are the files in the program directory. I love that.

Another of fun thing is the amount of development work that the developer
puts in. There is a new beta nearly every day if you are interested. I
am definately keeping an eye on this one.

Another very nice file manager, with dual panes, and freeware, is FreeCommander, from http://www.freecommander.com/. I've been using it for a couple of years and it quite stable.

Direcotry Opus is king! (No pun intended, but subconscious forces might have
been in play :-) You can use it out of the box, or do basically anything you
want with a powerful script language of kind.
